The drama that began the Hallyu Wave will get a second season because the sequel of “Winter Sonata” is in the works.
Kim Hee-yeol, vice president and head of Drama Production of Pan Entertainment said that they planned for the sequel to come out in time for the 20th anniversary of the drama. Pan is the production company that produced the original drama starring Bae Yong-joon and Choi Ji-woo.
“We have planned from six to seven years ago. The biggest concern is the sequels are not always successful. We want the sequence to be better than the original,” Kim said during the first day of the webinar titled, “The Role of K-dramas in Sharing and Shaping Culture Beyond Borders”. The webinar is hosted by the Korean Cultural Center and streamed via YouTube and the Facebook page of BGC Arts Center today.
They’ve been planning for the story for years. Kim said that they are still in the process of writing the script and there were changes in the scriptwriter to. He said that they are not giving up on creating a sequel befitting the original.
“Winter Sonata” was aired in 2002. It was directed by Yoon Seok-ho and Lee Hyeong-min. The script was written by Kim Eun-hee, Yoon Eun-kyung and Oh soo-yun. It was shot in the Nami Island Resort making it one of the must-visit places for first-time tourists in Seoul. It was aired in 2004 in GMA.
