This week’s Super comic book picks

Every Wednesday–New Comic Book Day–Super will pick three top titles you should pick up from your friendly comic book shop. These are the picks for this NCBD, Jan. 22, 2020:

“Atlantis Attacks” # 1 (Marvel Comics)

This five-issue series features the latest attack by King Namor of Atlantis against the heroes of the surface world. This follows the events of the last “Agents of Atlas” mini-series, when a billionaire creates the City of Pan with its portals that can leads citizens to other places. Writer Grek Pak brings back the Asian super team together (Shang-Chi, Amadeus Cho, Silk, etc.) with the original Agents of Atlas. The art is by Ario Anindito. More importantly, the ending of the back-up story in “Aero” # 6, had Namor himself showing an interest in none other than the Filipino superhero, Wave, (created by Pak and Leinil Francis Yu) a.k.a. Pearl Pangan of Cebu. Considering that Wave’s powers are water-based and that she spent the last story arc battling sirena, this is a good fit. And yes that is her facing off against Namor on the issue’s Cover A by Rock He-kim. This is a must-have.

“Birds of Prey” Giant # 1 (DC Comics)

In preparation for the upcoming DC Extended Universe “Birds of Prey” movie in which Margot Robbie reprises her role as Harley Quinn from David Ayer’s “Suicide Squad,” DC had put together a best hits package that features Harley, Black Canary and Huntress. This Giant features six stories, comprising five reprints of recent stories and one brand-new exclusive 16-page story from writer Gail Simone and artist Inaki Miranda. Get ready for your trip to Gotham City with this comic book.
