In an innovative retelling of the Arthurian legends, Katherine Langford (Hannah Baker in “13 Reasons Why”) is Nimue, a Fey girl who finds a magic sword–yes, Excalibur–and is told she must hand it over at all costs to a man she does not know: Merlin (Gustaf Skarsgard of “Vikings”)–yes, that Merlin, but not the way you expect. Along the way, Nimue meets a rogue named Arthur (Devon Terell), yes that Arthur, while being pursued by the mysterious Weeping Knight (Daniel Sharman), as well as Father Carden (Peter Mullan) and the Red Paladins.
This is the story at the heart of “Cursed,” the new Netflix show based on the 2019 young adult fantasy novel of the same title written by Tom Wheeler (best known as the showrunner of ABC’s “Empire”; he is also the show’s executive producer) and art by the the legendary Frank Miller (“The Dark Knight Returns”). It is not the Excalibur story you expect, that’s for sure.
The 10-episode series features surprising takes on age-old traditional stories surrounding this sword and the inscription: “Whoever wields the sword of power will be the one true king.” It is a coming-of-age story set amid one of the greatest legends of all time.
