It sounds like someone who cannot die would make for the perfect soldier, wouldn’t it? Well, Andy (Charlize Theron) would be the perfect person to ask, considering she cannot die. In fact, every one of the misfit immortals in Andy’s band of high-priced mercenaries would be able to provide some perspective on the matter. Andy has been able to find them somewhere through the millennia she’s been alive. We all get a look into this ultra-covert world through the eyes of the newest recruit, Nile (Kiki Layne).
“We’re soldiers, fighters,” Andy says. “Let’s just say we have a very special skill set: We’re very hard to kill.”
Welcome to the world of “The Old Guard,” the newest action movie from Netflix, streaming on July 10, 2020. Based on the mysterious and violent comic book by Greg Rucka (“Queen & Country,” “Stumptown,” “Whiteout”) and Leandro Fernandez (“X-Factor,” “The Incredible Hulk”) and published by Image Comics in 2017, “The Old Guard” has been operating for a long time, taking the most dangerous mission in the darkest shadows for the highest prices. But what happens when their cover is blown, their extraordinary qualities and their number betrayed? What do they do then? What happens when someone wants to harvest and weaponize their immortality?
“Throughout history, we’ve protected this world, fighting in the shadows,” Andy says. “But it’s nearly impossible to vanish in the world we live in today.”
This is what we will find out in the movie from director Gina Price-Bythewood (“Love & Basketball”) with Rucka himself writing the screenplay. The comic book took a really sweeping look at violence through the ages and the agents behind it and the movie should be no different. Theron, of course, has appeared in many big action movies, including excellent turns in “Mad Max: Fury Road,” “Atomic Blonde” and “The Fate of the Furious.” Layne is a relative newcomer who will also be appearing in the upcoming “Coming 2 America.”
“The Old Guard” also features Marwan Kenzari, Luca Marinelli, Harry Melling, Van Veronica Ngo with Matthias Schoenaerts and Chiwetel Ejiofor.
