Every Wednesday–New Comic Book Day–Super will pick three top titles you should pick up from your friendly comic book shop. These are the picks for this NCBD, Feb. 12, 2020:
“The Batman’s Grave” # 5 (DC Comics)
It is always outstanding when you get the best creators working on the most popular characters, and you often get that chance only in limited series. “The Batman’s Grave” is one such example of this. While the storytelling has been a bit overly decompressed, this story of the Dark Knight trying to crack one particularly difficult case features two of all of comicdom’s very best, writer Warren Ellis (“Planetary”) and artist Bryan Hitch (“The Authority”).
“Green Lantern” # 1 (DC Comics)
Speaking about great creators working on popular characters, DC’s “Green Lantern” reboot took Hal Jordan and went on a very, very hard sci-fi turn. This got truly at the end of the first “season,” which had Jordan being abducted by the Controllers and wound up changing history and reality. That season was followed by the three-issue “Green Lanterns: Blackstars” mini, and the creative team on all of that, genius writer Grant Morrison and artist Liam Sharp, returns as the Green Lantern must see what comes next after the Blackstars incident.
“Ascender” # 9 (Image Comics)
“Descender” was real sci-fi epic about artificial intelligence and colonial power that helped define the currently intriguing state of Image’s creator-owned titles. So when “Descender” ended after its long run with a cataclysmic end, we asked what came next? The answer is “Ascender,” this book’s time jump take on fantasy in the same setting, This ninth issue features the still building slow burn from talented creators Jeff Lemire and Dustin Nguyen.
